Dr. Robertson was appointed to the art history faculty in 1995 and specialized in contempory art history and theory. She was appointed a university Chancellor’s Professor in 2012. Her books co-authored with Craig McDaniel include: Themes of Contemporary Art: Visual Art after 1980 (Oxford University Press) with translations into Chinese and Korean; Spellbound: Rethinking the Alphabet (Intellect, U.K./distributed University of Chicago Press, U.S.); and Painting as a Language: Materials, Techniques, Form, Content (Cengage) with translation into Chinese. Other publications include the Foreword for the monograph Nancy Crow (Breckling Press), numerous exhibition catalogues, and essays and art criticism in Art Journal, Oxford Art Online, Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought, Encyclopedia of American Art (Oxford), Encyclopedia of 20th-century Photography (Taylor & Francis), Sculpture, Surface Design Journal, Fiberarts, Craft Arts International, and New Art Examiner. She is a contributing editor to Grove Art Online and a member of the International Association of Art Critics. With Craig McDaniel, she was founding co-director of the Southern Ohio Museum. She was associate curator at the Columbus (Ohio) Museum of Art. Her scholarship and curatorial activities have been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Ohio Arts Council, Indiana University New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities, Indiana University Office of International Programs, IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute, and residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Millay Colony for the Arts. Other awards include four awards for teaching excellence, a service award from Herron, an award for art critical writing from the Surface Design Association, and a Creative Renewal Fellowship for writing from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
