William Potter, Professor in Foundation Studies, received his M.F.A. degree in Painting from the University of Cincinnati’s school of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning (DAAP) and his B.F.A. in Painting and Sculpture from the Columbus College of Art and Design. He began his academic appointment at Herron in 2001. He was director of the Foundation Studies Program from 2001–2011. He was vice president of Foundation in Art Theory Education Biennial Conference, which the Herron School of Art and Design hosted in 2015. He currently teaches in Foundation Studies, Painting, and Drawing Programs.
In 2007, He received the Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Fellowship. The fellowship allowed for travel to Germany to study the Bauhaus and travel to the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas to study the work of Donald Judd.
Exhibitions include “Hidden Forms Embedded Meanings” at the Basile Gallery, “Touch Faith” at the Semantics Gallery curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones, “Shaped” at the Manifest Gallery curated by Jason Franz, and “Constructed Paintings” at Indiana Wesleyan University, “Materialize | Sculpture Using Digital Fabrication” at Wright State University and Purdue University, “Gesture Control: Work by Wesley Berg, Tyler Bohm, William Potter, and Shelby Shadwell” at the Dayton Visual Arts Center, and “Art From The Heartland” at the Indianapolis Arts Center.
He lectures nationally on teaching methods and his creative activity. Lectures have included, “Hidden Forms Embedded Meanings” at School of Visual Arts Twenty-Six National Conference on Liberal Arts and the Education of Artists and “Ways of Seeing: Arts and Culture” at the Biennial Foundations In Art Theory Education Conference in St. Louis, “Merging Media: Hybrid Practices in the Studio” at the South Eastern College Art Association Conference.
And he recently took up the banjo.
