The Department of Music and Arts Technology (MAT) joined forces with the Herron School of Art and Design on January 1, 2024. On this page, you can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this change and how those plans will affect you.
General information
MAT will join the Herron School of Art and Design effective January 1, 2024.
Bringing MAT into the Herron School builds on the strengths of both programs, providing new areas of study in the state’s top accredited arts and design school and offering new opportunities for faculty and students. MAT has long been an IU department within the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology and bringing it into the Herron School is part of the exciting transition to IU Indianapolis. Herron's exemplary international reputation and prestige, along with a focus on creativity and innovation, is strongly linked to the mission and goals of the MAT department.
Dean Greg Hull will continue to lead Herron, including MAT faculty, staff, and students.
Lecture, lab, practice, and rehearsal room locations will not change in the immediate future. MAT faculty and staff will remain in their current offices in the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex (ICTC) building.
MAT students and faculty will have access to Herron building facilities and classrooms, including the Think It Make It Lab.
The MAT webpages will integrate with the Herron website as of January 1, 2024. Until then, MAT will continue to be accessible at music.iupui.edu.
Current students
There will be no registration changes for Herron students outside of MAT programs.
Students in MAT programs graduating after December 2023 will change to Herron coding in their registration.
MAT course identifiers will not change in the immediate future.
Students in MAT programs will be assessed Herron fees on their bursar bill for the upcoming semester. MAT students will then have access to Herron building facilities and classrooms, including the Think It Make It Lab.

There are no changes to current student’s plan of study related to MAT joining Herron.

Music and Arts Technology students will continue to receive Indiana University degrees. Beginning January 2024, any student graduating with a MAT degree will see “Herron School of Art and Design, [their major], [Herron School of Art and Design Dean signature]” on their Indiana University diplomas.
The current MAT advisor will join the other experienced academic and career advisors who currently serve Herron students. MAT students will have access to all academic and career advisors within Herron.
