FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Galleries at IUPUI's Herron School of Art and Design will open three exhibitions exploring the diversity of artistic expression on Friday, Sept. 17, with works by Mongolian artist Tuguldur Yondonjamts, furniture designer Jason Schneider, and more than 12 international illustrators and designers.
These exhibitions present a wide range of materials and themes, encouraging visitors to consider the astounding abilities of visual arts to capture ideas through media and pure creative imagination.
'Tuguldur Yondonjamts -- Separated Geography From a Poem'
"Separated Geography From a Poem," on view through Dec. 8 in the Berkshire, Reese and Paul Galleries, will feature multidisciplinary works by Tuguldur Yondonjamts, including drawings, sculptures, photographs, digital prints, and installation and video art. The artist's body of work in this exhibition delves into concepts from the illustrious Mongolian epic, "Khan Kharangui [King Darkness]," as well as various cultural beliefs and phenomena that provocatively straddle fact and fiction.
"The exhibition brings together for the first time the most comprehensive survey of Tuguldur’s work, gathered from a project that began in 2016," said the curator, Uranchimeg Tsultem, assistant professor of art history and the Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies at Herron. "Through art, science and material studies, he explores the notion and meaning of interconnectivity, communication and global knowledge -- and this innovative approach in our pandemic times is truly valuable more than ever."
"Separated Geography From a Poem" is the second in a new international exhibition and artist residency series, which would not have been possible without the generous support of Ed Fehnel.
'Black & Blue -- On the Road with Jack White'
A collection of over 60 limited edition posters created in conjunction with rock musician Jack White's "Blunderbuss" and "Lazaretto" tours in 2012 and 2014-15 will be on display in the Marsh Gallery through Dec. 8. Fats Kaplin, one of America's most inventive instrumentalists who accompanied White on these tours, generously provided posters from his private collection and coordinated supplemental materials from his bandmate, Dominic Davis, and Third Man Records.
"Black & Blue -- On the Road with Jack White" is part of an annual series of Herron exhibitions featuring the best illustrators and graphic designers working today. It boasts outstanding contemporary poster design and offers visitors an exclusive glimpse into White's visionary music.
'Color Follows Form Follows Texture: New Work by Jason Schneider'
Jason Schneider, an assistant professor of woodworking and furniture design at Northern Michigan University, has explored the material possibilities of corrugated cardboard and has shared his inventive creations with organizations such as Google, the Furniture Society, the American Association of Woodturners, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Penland School of Crafts, and many universities across the country.
"Color Follows Form Follows Texture," which is supported in part by Herron's furniture design program, will be on display through Oct. 22 in the Basile Gallery.
