Fall 2020 Herron Highlights

Every three months, we share a roundup of the latest updates from the Herron community. Here, we've captured student, alumni, and faculty highlights that took place between October and December 2020, including exhibitions, publications, career moves, accomplishments, and accolades.

  • In October, IUPUI's social media team invited Herron students to submit digital concepts for a face mask competition. The designs by Fernanda Alonso, Sarah Schneider and Ria Vavhal had the highest votes and will be printed as limited-edition giveaway masks.
  • WTHR spoke to Lorie Lee Andrews (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '11) and Carolyn Springer, adjunct instructor of elective arts, about Forgiving Tuesday, a new take on Giving Tuesday that they co-launched for the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis.   • Lorie Lee Andrews (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '11), Christopher Dance (B.A.E. Art Education '07), Ceramics Technician Andrew Perry Davis, Ritch Hanna (B.A. Art History '10), Barbara Knuckles (B.F.A. Printmaking '79), Cory Robinson (B.F.A. Woodworking '96), Vicky Shaffer White (B.F.A. Painting '84), and Julia Wickes (B.F.A. Painting '02) exhibited their works from Dec. 4 to 24 in the annual color-themed group show of the Harrison Center for the Arts titled "Brrrgundy."
  • In November, 12 candidates from Herron's M.F.A. program in visual art – Emily Archer, Patrick Bennett, Justin Cecil, Leena Dobouni, Anastasya Halsema, Christina Hollering, Karri Leamon, Alex Moore, Sherry Polley, Leia Roberts, Ellen Ross-Musick and Scott Russo – presented their newest works in the online exhibition "Together Apart."
  • Isaac Arthur (B.F.A. Visual Communication '09) spoke to Krista Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing and the Weimer Faculty Fellow at the IU Kelley School of Business, about how behavioral economics can help create more compelling food and beverage brands.   • Heidi Bailey (B.A.E. Art Education '91) received the Best of Show award in the 42nd Elkhart Juried Regional Art Exhibition for her sculpture "Fairy Tales are Subject to Decay." The exhibition ran from Oct. 10 to Dec. 20 at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Ind.
  • Karen Baldner, adjunct instructor of printmaking, won the Juror's Choice Award for her artist's book, "German/Jew," on view from Nov. 20 to Jan. 7 in "Paper Works VII" at The Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, Mo. In December, Baldner showed her work online in "Currents," the 2020 Members' Showcase Annual Exhibition presented by North American Hand Papermakers.
  • Chicago-based artist Audrey Barcio (B.A.E Art Education '07) was interviewed by Occhi Magazine in October. Read the Q-and-A about her work and her rigorous, interdisciplinary studio practice.
  • Mike Barclay (B.A. Art History '06) co-juried "A Sculptural Exhibition" presented by The In Art Gallery. The exhibition ran from Nov. 1 to 30 and included works by Stacey Holloway (B.F.A. Sculpture '06) and Emily Stergar (B.F.A. Sculpture '14). Holloway's "Feeding," part of her latest series "Fabricated Interactions During Social Distancing," was awarded 1st place.
  • Abigail Blair (B.F.A. Drawing & Illustration '16) exhibited an illustration in "Birds of a Feather," a Louisville Visual Art pop-up exhibition at the Portland Museum during the 7th Annual Portland Art & Heritage Fair on Oct. 10.
  • David Bowen (B.F.A. Sculpture '99) exhibited in the group show "Duplicate Your Dream" at the PRECTXE Festival in Seoul, Korea, from Nov. 7 to Dec. 13. Bowen's solo exhibition "on water" opened on Sept. 19 at Joseph Nease Gallery in Duluth, Minn., and runs until Jan. 2.
  • In the Graduate Thesis Exhibition, the Herron Galleries highlighted the work of six emerging visual artists from the school's Master of Fine Arts 2020 graduating class: Kennedy Conner, Frank Mullen, Hailey Potts, Adam Rathbun, Sarah Strong and Denise Rolland Troyer. The exhibition opened on Nov. 4 and will remain on view until Jan. 16. View the virtual 360-degree tour.
  • Lauren Daugherty (M.A. Art Therapy '18), an arts-based wellness experiences manager at the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, and Madysen Koontz (B.F.A. Painting '20) exhibited their works from Oct. 8 to Nov. 18 at the Indianapolis Art Center in "Homebound: Indy Creates."
  • Mary Meehan Firtl (B.F.A. Painting '78) exhibited from Oct. 27 to Nov. 21 in "A Look Back, Moving Forward: A Retrospective in Pastels" at the Heartland Artists Gallery in Plymouth, Ind. Three of the 48 pastel paintings on display emerged from a plein air session, where Firtl spent three days painting with fellow Herron alumna Ellen Fischer along Lake Michigan and the Beverly Shores area.
  • On Nov. 7, Molly Fish (B.F.A. Painting '19) opened Peddie & Fish Artist Collective, in Madison, Ind., with her friend Hannah Peddie Miller, a Hanover College graduate.
  • Herron alums Gary Gee (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), John G. MooreKevin Nance-West and Shamira Wilson exhibited their works at the Indianapolis Art Center in "Eighteen: Black Lives Matter," featuring artists who created the iconic Indiana Avenue mural in July. The exhibition opened on Oct. 23 and will remain on display until Jan. 6.
  • Brian Gonzales (M.F.A. Visual Art '12) recreated his home living room in an intimate art installation for visitors to browse through his collection of prints. "A Private Collection of Printed Matters" opened on Sept. 24 at Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, and ran until Nov. 28.
  • In October, integrative studio practice student Xiaoman "Joy" Gu installed her sculpture "Academic Without Borders" in the atrium of the IUPUI University Library. Learn more about Gu's sculpture and the long-standing partnership between Herron and the library that made it possible.
  • Stacey Holloway (B.F.A. Sculpture '06), an associate professor of sculpture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, exhibited in "Flight of the Elephant & Other Tales" at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from Oct. 2 to Nov. 20.
  • During the 2020 Indiana Arts Homecoming conference, held virtually on Oct. 14 to 15, Interim Dean Greg Hull spoke about how the Herron Galleries are working to make their exhibitions more accessible to visitors via virtual 360-degree tours. Shelby Nower (B.F.A. Drawing & Illustration '20) and Kassie Woodworth (B.F.A. Sculpture '19) also shared their creative processes behind their pieces commemorating the ratification of the 19th Amendment.   • Alyssa Imran (B.F.A. Furniture Design '18), Aleya Lanteigne (B.F.A. Furniture Design '15), and Brittany Rudolf (B.F.A. Sculpture '16) co-founded Cumulus Cooperative, an online craft market for their handmade goods and artworks.
  • Julian J. Jones (B.F.A. Photography '20), with the aid of Christopher Newell (B.F.A. Photography '20), captured the cover image that adorned the Fall 2020 issue of PATTERN Magazine, celebrating change and diversity.
  • Samuel Levi Jones (B.F.A. Photography '09) exhibited in "I Yield My Time. F*ck You!" from Oct. 29 to Dec. 19 at Altman Siegel Gallery in San Francisco, Calif., and in "Paper Pavilions" at the Columbus Area Arts Council's 411 Gallery in Columbus, Ind., from Oct. 1 to Nov. 21. In addition, on Dec. 3, Jones talked with Howardena Pindell, Torkwase Dyson, Julie Mehretu, and Adeze Wilford during "Pindell's Legacy: Artists," an online conversation hosted by The Shed.
  • Matt Kenyon (B.F.A. Furniture Design '08), Johnny McKee (B.F.A. Photography '97), Jennifer Ollikainen (B.F.A. Sculpture '10), William Denton Ray (B.F.A. General Fine Arts), Shelley Spicuzza (M.F.A. Visual Art '18), Johnson Simon (M.F.A. Visual Art '18), Adjunct Instructor Carolyn Springer, and Denise Rolland Troyer (M.F.A. Visual Art '20) exhibited from November to December in the Harrison Center's Annual Holiday Window Walk in Indianapolis.
  • In "Some Books Make Us Free" Johnny McKee (B.F.A. Photography '97) and Shamira Wilson (B.F.A. Furniture Design) brought to life the themes of rare and original works of history as well as political philosophy through art. The exhibition, sponsored by Sagamore Institute, opened on Oct. 2 at the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis and ran until Nov. 1.
  • Eileen Misluk, assistant professor of art therapy, published a paper in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association on promoting clinical and self advocacy efforts to raise awareness of eating disorders. Misluk also organized an exhibition called "Imagine Me Beyond What You See" at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital's Healing Arts studio, which runs from Dec. 20 to March 20. In addition, Misluk and Liz Wagoner (M.A. Art Therapy '17) spoke to The Indiana Lawyer about the therapeutic potential of art therapy programs for inmates coping with a variety of addictions, including substance abuse.
  • Katrina Murray (B.F.A. Painting '12), William Denton Ray (B.F.A. General Fine Arts), John Ross (B.F.A. Sculpture '97), and Kassie Woodworth (B.F.A. Sculpture '19) presented their works in "TINY," the annual holiday exhibition of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, which was presented virtually from Dec. 4 to Jan. 8.
  • Associate Professor William Potter, associate dean of faculty affairs at Herron and alumnus of the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), was awarded the CCAD 2020 Arts Educator Award in October.
  • Associate Professor Danielle Riede, the Randolph H. Deer professor in painting, exhibited in two solo shows this fall. "Painting with Air" opened on Oct. 17 at the Centre d'Art Contemporain Walter Benjamin in Perpignan, France, and continues through Jan. 31. "Holding the Sun" opened on Nov. 23 at Echo Arts in Bozeman, Mont., and continues through Feb. 1. In addition, Riede's work was included in "Linear Rhythms," a group exhibition presented by Garvey|Simon, which opened on Oct. 22 at Artisan Lofts in New York, N.Y., and will remain on view until March 20.
  • Chancellor's Professor Emerita Jean Robertson wrote an essay in the accompanying catalog for the exhibition "Nancy Crow: Drawings: Monoprints and Riffs" at the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, which opened on Aug. 4 and will remain on view until March 7.
  • On episode 22 of the Why Make? podcast, Cory Robinson (B.F.A. Woodworking '99), the George & Diane Seybert professor in furniture design, talked about his work as well as how art history and furniture coexist in the world.
  • Lynette Therese Sauer (B.F.A. Painting '16) exhibited three of her meditation drawings in "Darkest Before Dawn: Art in a Time of Uncertainty" at Ethan Cohen KuBe in Beacon, N.Y. The group show opened on Nov. 1 and will remain on view until Jan. 30.
  • Marna Shopoff (M.F.A. Visual Art '14) exhibited in "Inspiration in Isolation," a group show of artworks from canceled or postponed exhibitions and artworks created during quarantine as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition opened on Nov. 4 at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, La., and ran until Dec. 19. Shopoff's work was also presented online in Jonathan Ferrara Gallery at Art Miami 2020 from Dec. 1 to 20 via Artsy.net.
  • Beatriz Vásquez (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06) exhibited her papel picado work alongside two other artists in "El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana: Homage & Celebration," presented in partnership with Women4Change Indiana. The exhibition was on view virtually and in-person from Nov. 6 to Dec. 30 at Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
  • Erin Harper Vernon (B.F.A. Photography '03) was one of many local artists to receive financial support from the Power Plant Emergency Grant program facilitated by Big Car Collaborative and made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Vernon will use the funds to create public artwork for the Bean Creek neighborhood of Indianapolis as part of her involvement in Big Car's Artist and Public Life Residency program.
