FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS -- In March and April, the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI will showcase works by Tarik Carroll and Anne Harris, examining self-concept and celebrating representation. Both artists will speak at public events, which will be followed by receptions for the opening of their respective exhibitions.
'Tarik Carroll–EveryBODY IS A GOOD BODY: The RE-formation of Beauty Standards'
Tarik Carroll, a body positivity activist and photographer, is the inaugural artist featured in the Michael A. and Laurie Burns McRobbie Emerging Artist Series. Carroll's exhibition, "EveryBODY IS A GOOD BODY: The RE-formation of Beauty Standards," will promote empowerment and acceptance of all body types and, in his words, serve as "a visual conversation about inclusion and diversity."
"EveryBODY IS A GOOD BODY" will be on view in Herron's Marsh Gallery from March 23 through April 26. This exhibition features nearly 50 photographs and marks the first time an art gallery has shown Carroll's work as a cohesive installation. The images on view will include some from his ongoing "EveryMAN Project," which questions society's long-held masculinity ideals, particularly for people of color.
As part of his weeklong residency, Carroll will hold workshops with Herron students and participate in a public conversation on March 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Eskenazi Hall's Basile Auditorium.
The McRobbie Emerging Artist Series provides a forum to discuss new ideas and artistic practices while expanding learning experiences across the university community.
'Anne Harris: The Mind's I'
"Anne Harris: The Mind's I" will be on display in the Basile Gallery from April 4 to April 26. The exhibition will feature a large-scale grid of self-portrait drawings created by Indianapolis artists during collaborative workshops with Anne Harris, a nationally recognized artist and associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Harris invites other artists to create self-portraits inside public spaces as part of "The Mind's I," a traveling and ongoing project. The project launched in 2012 at Julius Caesar Gallery, a Chicago-based artist space, to spark discussions regarding self-perception and drawing. Since then, she has held these events and exhibitions across the United States and the world.
Learn more about "The Mind's I" during an artist's talk and reception with Harris from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on March 30 in Eskenazi Hall's Basile Auditorium.
This exhibition is supported by a grant from IUPUI's Welcoming Campus Innovation (Re)Building Community through Engagement Fund.
