FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS -- This summer, the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI will bring to Indianapolis James O. Clark's light sculptures, as well as the photographic work of Torry Brown, a recent Herron graduate.
Both exhibitions will be displayed at Eskenazi Hall, 735 W. New York St., from June 15 through Aug. 31, 2022. A closing reception will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.
'Illumination: The Sculpture of James O. Clark'
"Illumination: The Sculpture of James O. Clark," an in-depth look at the artist's metamodernist work, will be on view in the school's Berkshire, Reese and Paul Galleries and Basile Gallery. The exhibition features 23 light-based studio investigations created between 1993 and 2000. Each piece highlights the intriguing interplay of light and form while also challenging ideas of suitable materials for artistic expression.
Clark, a professor at New York City's School of Visual Arts, sculpts with light, including neon, fluorescent, incandescent, argon lights, and electroluminescent wire. According to the artist, "Light has a language of its own, it speaks in many tones and volumes with endless musical notes. Its reflection and refraction properties create a uniquely mysterious conversation." His enthralling sensory approach to sculpture invites visitors to reflect on their own conscious connections with each piece, as well as the transformational power of human perception.
"Illumination" is organized by Murray State University's (MSU) Clara M. Eagle Gallery in Murray, Kentucky, and supported by a grant from the Creative Motif Fund in New York. The exhibition debuted at MSU in August 2021, then moved to the University of Tennessee's UT Downtown Gallery in Knoxville in October 2021.
Clark has exhibited at institutions such as the Morris Museum in New Jersey, the Sideshow Gallery in Chicago, and the New Museum in New York, among others. He has also earned awards and honoraria from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
'If I Stay Before I Leave -- Images by Torry Brown'
Also on view in the Marsh Gallery are a selection of traditional black-and-white photographs by Torry Brown, a photographer born and raised in southern Indiana. "If I Stay Before I Leave" will feature over 20 images in all formats, each scanned from the original negatives and printed digitally.
Through a poetic imaging practice, Brown's recent work addresses the feelings of an experience and emphasizes the pliability of memory that inevitably follows those fleeting moments. The images in the exhibition probe the delicate dynamic between feeling a part of and apart from a landscape.
Brown recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Herron. Beginning this fall, he will pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Yale School of Art.
