Every three months, we publish a roundup of the most recent updates from the Herron community. Here's a look at what our students, alumni, and faculty were up to between July and September 2022, including exhibitions, publications, career moves, accomplishments, and accolades.
- Amy Lee Applegate (B.F.A. Painting '15) received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. The organization awards grants to emerging artists all over the world.
- David Bowen (B.F.A. Sculpture '99) participated in the "1,000 Miles Per Hour" group exhibition at Columbus College of Art and Design's Beeler Gallery. The show opened on Sept. 15 and will run through Oct. 28.
- On Sept. 28, the Herron Galleries opened the exhibition "Past is Present: Black Artists Respond to the Complicated Histories of Slavery," featuring the work of several Herron alums, including Torry Brown (B.F.A. Photography '22), Matthew Cooper, the late John Wesley Hardrick, Samuel Levi Jones (B.F.A. Photography '09), and Shamira Wilson. The exhibition will remain on view through Jan. 14, 2023.
- Ally Christian, a drawing and illustration student, won the U.S.-Canada Grand Prize in a tour poster contest hosted by Creative Allies and Twenty One Pilots, an American musical duo.
- Over Labor Day weekend, Matthew Cooper, Gary Gee (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), Chris Hill (M.F.A. Visual Art '16), Julian Jamaal Jones (B.F.A. Photography '20), Kevin Nance-West, Morgan Robinson-Gay (B.F.A. Sculpture '22), Johnson Simon (M.F.A. Visual Art '18), Will Watson (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '11), and Shamira Wilson participated in the second annual "BUTTER" art fair in Indianapolis.
- On Sept. 15, Jingo M. de la Rosa, an associate faculty of drawing and illustration, presented Park Tudor School's Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Lecture about his commercial illustration and teaching work.
- Jennifer Delgadillo (B.F.A. Painting '10) and Jackie Espinosa (B.F.A. Printmaking '22) were among the artists featured in "Identidad, Dreams y Marchas," a group exhibition at the Indianapolis Artsgarden that opened on Sept. 9 in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The exhibition will be on display through Oct. 28.
- Jose Di Gregorio (B.F.A. Painting '06) installed a new mural at the First and Main Streets intersection in Los Altos, California. Read an article about the piece in the Los Altos Town Crier.
- Carlie Foreman, a sculpture alum, exhibited work in a solo exhibition, "Full Disclosure," at Tube Factory Artspace in Indianapolis from Aug. 5 to Sept. 18.
- Brian Fick (B.F.A. Painting '85), David Frye (B.F.A. Printmaking '85), Carla Knopp (B.F.A. Painting '84), Steve Paddack (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '84), Gwendolyn C. Skaggs, and Martha Lindenborg Vaught (B.F.A. Painting '88) took part in the SPRING/BREAK Art Show's 10th-anniversary exhibition in New York City from Sept. 7 to 12.
- Gary Gee (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), Christina Hollering (M.F.A. Visual Art '22; B.F.A. Painting '12), and Johnny McKee (B.F.A. Photography '97) were among the artists featured in the Harrison Center's September exhibitions. Johnson Simon (M.F.A. Visual Art '18) also curated "Deciduous," a group show of abstract works.
- On Sept. 23, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields debuted "We. The Culture: Works by the Eighteen Art Collective," which includes work by alums Gary Gee (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), John G. Moore, Kevin Nance-West, and Shamira Wilson. The exhibition will be on display until September 24, 2023.
- Colleen Gross, a sculpture student, installed a piece titled "Fundamental Entities" in the IUPUI University Library's 45-foot atrium.
- Karl Hauser (B.F.A. Sculpture '79) had a solo exhibition, "Fever Dream," from Aug. 4 to Sept. 17 at Transmission Gallery in Oakland, California.
- A new mural by Andrea Haydon (B.F.A. Visual Communication Design '11) was unveiled in July on the south-facing wall of the Philippines Cultural Community Center, located at 4141 East St. The mural celebrates Filipino culture and heritage.
- Dawn Holder, an associate professor of fine arts, opened a solo show, "Weep, Their Banner: Fallen Monuments," on Sept. 12 in Franklin College's Johnson Center for Fine Arts. The exhibition will be on view through Oct. 28.
- As part of Lilly's Global Day of Service in September, Christina Hollering (M.F.A. Visual Art '22; B.F.A. Painting '12) and 30 Lilly employees painted a fence mural at Purpose Park in Indianapolis' Hawthorne neighborhood. Hollering designed the artwork and oversaw the Lilly team's implementation. Another Lilly team collaborated with sculpture student Ben Woolford to repaint Joanna Tanaskovich's (B.F.A. Painting '12) public art piece on the corner of 10th and Indiana Ave. These projects were made possible by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
- Stacey Holloway (B.F.A. Sculpture '06) had a solo exhibition, "Ill At Ease," from Aug. 5 to Sept. 23 at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence, Alabama.
- Robert Horvath, an associate professor of painting, and Uranchimeg Tsultem, an assistant professor of art history and the Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies, were two of eight Indiana University faculty members named to the inaugural IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellowship program. - In September, Duane King (B.F.A. Visual Communication '83) was one of three IUPUI alumni honored with the Maynard K. Hine Award. The Hine Award recognizes contributions to the campus and its alumni programs.
- Jeffrey Klinefelter (B.F.A. Painting '74) won the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's trout stamp art contest. His artwork will appear on the 2023 Delaware Trout Stamp, which will go on sale on July 1, 2023.
- The Indianapolis Business Journal named Kaitlin Knapp (M.A. Art Therapy '17) one of this year's 20 in their Twenties honorees as an emerging leader making a difference through art therapy. Learn more about Knapp's work for Ascension St. Vincent and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.
- Furniture design students Cam McGookey, Annie Vanderpool Sinchai, and Lilly Tomandl were chosen to compete in Design Emphasis 2022, the industry's most prestigious competition for college and university students. The competition was held in August during the 2022 International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta. McGookey took first place in the accent tables category.
- Austin Reavis (B.F.A. Sculpture '10) debuted "Scripts," a solo exhibition of new works at the Artisan Depot Gallery in Cowan, Tennessee, on Sept. 3. The works will be on display through Oct. 30.
- T.J. Reynolds (B.A.E. Art Education '12) exhibited his work in "We Catch the Light" in the Madam Walker Legacy Center's fourth-floor gallery from July 1 to Sept. 30. Learn more about Reynolds' work by reading a Q&A via Indiana Avenue News.
- Danielle Riede, the Randolph H. Deer Professor of Painting, opened the solo exhibition "Venus Walks on Pearls" at Künstlerloge in Ratingen, Germany. The show opened on Aug. 26 and will continue through Oct. 30.
- On Aug. 26, Helen Sanematsu, an associate professor of visual communication, delivered an online presentation as an IUPUI Center for Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP) Scholar. Watch a YouTube video of her talk titled "Designing to Serve: Using Design to Translate Research into Practice."
- Skye Lee Smith (B.A.E. Art Education '15) was featured in an article in The Indianapolis Star about her watercolor paintings of people's homes and local landmarks.
- In June, Indianapolis Monthly interviewed Beatriz Vasquez (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06) about her papel picado craft and personal style. She also led a two-day family wearable art workshop at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis in August.
- Herron alum John Vazquez was featured in a 317 Project story about his unique sticky-note sketches by The Indianapolis Star.
- Natasha Vidger (M.F.A. Visual Art '18) displayed paintings in the Crawfordsville District Public Library in September. To learn more about her focus on animals as her subject matter, read an article in Crawfordsville's Journal Review.
- Libba Wilcox, an assistant professor of art education, organized Herron's participation in IUPUI Regatta's Cultural Arts Fair at Military Park on Sept. 24. During the event, art education students provided a button-making activity, Scott Russo (M.F.A. Visual Arts '21; B.F.A. Ceramics '19), an associate faculty member of ceramics, demonstrated wheel-throwing, and several students painted en plein air.
- Asheville Made profiled Alan "Doc" Welty, a Herron alum and ceramicist. Welty earned the nickname at Herron by carrying his supplies in an old doctor's bag.
